Hello we are still new to electric and have our first long distance journey next week. Can anybody tell me what is a safe minimum battery level before we should re-charge? We had an issue with the re-charging flap and the VW mechanic who came to fix it said that the car will go into limp mode if the battery charge was too low.
Thank you.
What is a safe minimum charge?
How low you go will depend mainly on availability of chargers along your route, and your own accepted level of risk (just like with an ICE vehicle). A few general points though
You should be able to drop to aound 5% with no adverse effects. Below this, temperature has a bearing on when "tortoise mode" kicks in (later in summer than in winter)
Charging from lower states of charge (SOC) is usually more rapid. Those cautious types who start every journey on 100% and recharge at 80% will only ever see slow charging
Don't assume that the charger you're aiming for will be open/vacant/working. A bit of spare range will help you seek out alternatives in these situations.
No problem with occasionally letting the battery get to low SOC (or topping off to 100% if you've a long journey the next moring, but try not to leave the car standing for long periods of low or high SOC. Aim for 20 - 80%.
Happy EVing!
